There are 4 major types of internet providers here in Nebraska:
- Telecom Companies that provide DSL services. CenturyLink and Frontier are based on a newer "FIBER-OPTIC to the curb" technology that delivers speeds of over 100 Mbps in some areas. Most of the Omaha area and Council Bluffs can receive at least 20-40 Mbps now through DSL providers. In some areas, the telecoms have started to offer fiber-optic Internet service directly to the home. But those offerings are somewhat limited in Nebraska, so call us for updates on locations and speeds.
- Cable Companies that provide coaxial internet. The cable companies have long been the providers of choice for residential service, and people usually choose them by default. They offer 25 Mbps to 1000 Mbps service in most of the major cities. Speeds can sometimes vary by usage in a neighborhood, but with the newer DOCSIS 3.1 standards, that is fairly rare now. Cable Internet is still the most popular option for gamers, with its low latency and ping rates.
- Satellite Internet. Satellite internet has developed a poor reputation over the years for lack of speed and very high cost. There are newer and better providers such as Viasat, that provide speeds of 12-100 Mbps or more, and have a price point closer to $50-$75. You can now get satellite internet with no data caps. So streaming and other data intensive activities are possible.
- Fiber Optic Internet. Centurylink offers Fiber to the Home service in many parts of Omaha now! Fiber is the ultimate internet experience. Super low latency and speed up to 1000 Mbps make it the internet of choice.
Netflix ISP Speed Index
PLEASE NOTE: While we enjoy seeing a ranking of the ISPs, (keeps them accountable) there are a few things to you should take into consideration when looking at a ranking like this.
1. All the DSL providers are ranked at the bottom of the list (and have been in every test) This isnt really an accurate assessment, as most all DSL providers (Centurylink, etc.) are forced to serve rural areas over great distances, and may only have top speeds of 1.5mps when they are 5 miles outside a town or city. Not the case with cable providers. Example: Centurylink and Frontier would have much higher ratings if they were measured in the same areas as Comcast. 2. Some of the DSL providers offer Fiber, but weren't included in the Index. 3. Six of the providers below are offered here Nebraska. Centurylink, Charter, Mediacom, Windstream and COX. |
